Two movies of particular interest to me launch this weekend. It's kind of odd because my expectations for both of them are not that high, but at the same time I could not be more excited about seeing them.
Let's start with "Scott Pilgrim." I am a huge fan of the "Scott Pilgrim" comic book series. I have followed this work of Bryan Lee O'Malley for many years, waiting with bated breath for the release of each new volume. The series focuses on a guy in his mid twenties, Scott, who is a video game loving, bass guitar playing, slightly lazy, and greatly confused individual. Scott's forays into life, love, and basically everything have left him bewildered. Then he meets Ramona and falls immediately in love. The only problem is that he must defeat her seven evil exes to continue dating her. An amazing video game reference filled story then ensues. The concluding book in the series was released last month, so thankfully the story was all tied up prior to the movie release. My low expectations about this movie stem from the fact that it is so easy to ruin an existing franchise by turning it into a film, not to mention I am skeptical about Michael Cera playing the role of Scott. Hopefully he will surprise me and fit the role perfectly. Putting my trepidations aside, I am extremely excited to see this movie. Any movie based on a pre-existing story that I love has to be entertaining at least to some extent, right? Well, almost any movie (I'm looking at you Shyamalan).
The other movie coming out this weekend that I will be rushing to see is, of course, "The Expendables". I mean, come on, who wouldn't want to see this movie if they have even the slightest interest in action flicks? Never before have so many iconic action heroes been stuffed into a neat little package and presented to the viewing masses. So why the skepticism about this one? Well, does anybody have any idea what this movie is actually about? I know I don't. I haven't felt the need to go look it up either. Odds are the plot line will not be that great, but you know what? I don't care! No one should go to this film expecting to see a tale dripping with intrigue and supported by deep and rich characters. You go see "The Expendables" to watch badass guys blow things up!
This weekend I plan on seeing both these movies. They are definitely on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, but I'm equally excited for each of them. Oh, and if I catch you using your cell phone while I'm there, so help me, I will forcefully remove you from the theater myself.
Hahaha You can forcefully remove them after I get done shoving their phone where the sun doesn't shine. :)
